October 5th, 1971 Harvey Poston founded Southland Equipment Service, Inc.
Harvey Poston, an old farm boy who grew up in Orangeburg County, South Carolina and at age 18 was the youngest flight commander in the Navy, was running a local cotton warehouse when he started a forklift service business out of frustration with what was being offered as forklift service. Harvey knew equipment not only in the mechanical aspects, but he knew hydraulics and electronics and was able to fix things the first time and keep customer equipment productive, enabling them to run their business and serve their customers.
The Southland reputation grew and with it, the business grew, expanding into equipment sales, rentals, and a strong parts business which is key to any service repair.
Quality service in a timely manner at a reasonable cost was the foundation the business was built on and remains the key component today.
Whenever a customer who has used others for their forklift service contacts Southland for help the usual first remark when the technician is finished with the repair is “Wow, you actually fix things!”
